A young German girl grows up with her little sister, happy and carefree under the sunny blue skies of Athens during the interwar period, surrounded by a loving family, schoolmates and friends. The impending war seems very distant to her, even though the first signs have already begun to appear. Before the winds of war start to rage, she will find love - and then lose it. Only to rediscover it by pure chance, and hang on to it with all the strength she possesses.

This love gives her the courage to begin a new life far from her homeland and her family. Now, her only support is the man she loves. Life however, is terribly hard on her, depriving her of almost everything she holds dear. One blow follows after another, breaking her, bringing her down to her knees. But she refuses to give up. By sheer strength of will she gets back on her feet, and achieves the seemingly impossible - raising her family her way, as she sees fit, vigorously protecting it from any interference.
