Περιγραφή

This textbook provides a pragmatic perspective on second language development in an academic context. The first part lays down the foundations of a metapragmatic approach to utterance interpretation at discourse level in the L2. In the second and third parts the redefined constructs of pragmatic awareness and metapragmatic awareness are applied to the comparative analysis of a range of academic and newspaper/ magazine genres - for example, research article - editorial, research article title - newspaper headline, abstract - news report - and to the assessment of sample student answers indicating levels of pragmatic competence and language development. The glossary of linguistic terms introduces the tools of metapragmatic and metalinguistic analysis which draws on Sperber and Wilson`s Relevance Theory and Halliday`s Systemic Functional Grammar respectively. The book includes numerous self-study exercises and commentaries.
