More than one-hundred excellent color illustrations in this book present the best wall-paintings from fifty-eight Byzantine church of the district of Rethymnon. They give us the opportunity to admire the incomparable beauty of those which have survived and form an idea of the splendor with which the churches were once decorated, before time unrecoverably destroyed them.
The introduction gives an historical survey, in connection with Cretan art and the influence received from the great artistic centers of Byzantium.
