The struggle to achieve the independence of Macedonia began at the same time as the great Greek revolution of 1821, but the uprising led by E. Papas in Halkidiki and that at Naussa under Zafirakis in 1822 were put down with much bloodshed by the strong Turkish forces stationed in the Thessaloniki area.
From the time of the establishment of the small Greek Kingdom, the permanent concern of the nation was for the fate and the future of their fellow-countrymen who had remained under the Ottoman yoke.
The struggle was constant and there was a series of local uprisings, such as that of 1854 in Epirus, Thessaly, and Macedonia. Similarly, in Crete successive outbreaks of revolution kept Greek-Turkish relations in a state of constant tension. Later, in 1878, there was a fresh uprising in Macedonia, from Olympus to the western mountain regions, and a Provisional Greek Government was set up in Litochoro.
Up to that point, all the uprisings had been directed against the occupying power and had as their purpose the liberation of Macedonia from the Turkish yoke and its unification with the free Greek state. From the 1870s, however, a new combatant made its appearance on the scene -Bulgaria- and, indeed, in areas with a solidly Greek population.
At the same time, the development of the nationalism of the Balkan peoples and the setting up of an independent Bulgarian Church went hand-in-hand with Pan-Slavism and served the strategic objectives of Russia in its quest for an outlet into the Mediterranean. This, in turn, provoked a reaction on the part of the other Powers, each of which was interested in its own way in filling the gap created by the weakening of the Ottoman Empire and the control of the Straits. This, in essence, was the Eastern Question.
It could be said that the struggle for Macedonia began in the 1870s, with the Schism of the Bulgarian Exarchate and the Treaty of San Stefano of 1878, passed through various phases, was vindicated by the Balkan Wars and the liberation of Macedonia [...].
